Election day is a short three weeks away now, but we're in for some of the messiest possible campaigning in the run-up to a defining moment in US history.

Unfortunately, the polls remain very close, so we still don't have a particularly clear view of what our country will look like in January.

Donald Trump says he wants to wield the military against those who challenge him

Donald Trump has provoked an angry backlash from Democrats after calling for the US armed forces to be turned against his political adversaries when voters go to the polls at next month's presidential election.

In comments that added further fuel to fears of an authoritarian crackdown if he recaptures the White House, the Republican nominee said the military or national guard should be deployed against opponents that he called "the enemy within" when the election takes place on 5 November.

Harris calls out Trump's concerning behavior

Vice President Kamala Harris deployed a new show-and-tell approach to lambasting former President Donald Trump at her Monday night rally, playing clips of him calling his opponents the "enemy within" and saying that it signaled that he was "increasingly unstable and unhinged."

"After all these years, we know who Donald Trump is: He is someone who will stop at nothing to claim power for himself," Harris said during her campaign stop in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Harris attempts to shore up support from Black men

Vice President Kamala Harris announced a plan on Monday to give Black men more economic opportunities and other chances to thrive as she works to energize a key voting bloc that has Democrats concerned about a lack of enthusiasm.

Harris' plan includes providing forgivable business loans for Black entrepreneurs, creating more apprenticeships and studying sickle cell and other diseases that disproportionately affect African American men.

Harris already has said she supports legalizing marijuana and her plan calls for working to ensure that Black men have opportunities to participate as a "national cannabis industry takes shape." She also is calling for better regulating cryptocurrency to protect Black men and others who invest in digital assets.
