Most couples are prepared to spend a small fortune on their wedding, but the price tag can vary wildly depending on where in America you choose to have your big day.

Using research by The Knot, which surveyed 9,318 couples, Visual Capitalist mapped the average cost of a wedding ceremony and reception in each US state. The figures do not include engagement rings — which typically cost around $5,500 — and data for Alaska and Hawaii was unavailable.

With the exception of California and DC, the country's 10 most expensive states to get married in are concentrated in the Northeast: New Jersey ($55,000), New York ($49,000), Connecticut ($44,000), Maine ($44,000), New Hampshire ($44,000), Rhode Island ($44,000), Vermont ($44,000) and Massachusetts ($42,000).

Weddings are most affordable in Utah, with an average cost of just $17,000, but they're also cheap in Idaho, Kentucky and Montana, where tying the knot will only set you back around $21,000.
