According to figures from September 2024, nearly six in every 10 Americans are registered to vote β€” and of those, 47 percent have declared a party affiliation.

With the US presidential election less than a month away, USAFacts has mapped voter registration across the country, as well as the share of registered Republicans, Democrats, independents and others in each state.

When it comes to the number of registered voters per state, the nation's three most populous states top the list. California has the most overall, with 22.1 million, followed by Texas (17.9 million) and Florida (13.7 million).

The fewest number of voters, on the other hand, are found in Wyoming (232,222), Vermont (502,378) and Alaska (607,603).

Arkansas, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, North Dakota and Ohio have not released 2024 voter registration data to the public, so are not included in these figures.

According to 2022 Census Bureau data, voter registration was highest in Oregon (82.7 percent) and Washington, DC (82.4 percent). North Carolina was home to the country's lowest rate of 60.8 percent.

Of America's 186.5 million voters, 36 million are registered Republicans, based on numbers from states where political party affiliation is included in voter registration records.

Wyoming has by far the highest share of voters registered as Republicans, at more than 80 percent, followed by Idaho (59.5 percent).

In terms of numbers, California and Florida have the most registered Republicans, with 5.48 million and 5.38 million, respectively β€” totalling around 30 percent of all registered Republican voters nationwide.

Democrats make up more than 45 million of the country's registered voters, as of September 2024. More than 20 percent of them are Californians (10.2 million voters), while 14 percent belong to New York (6.4 million).

Washington, DC, has the highest percentage of registered Democrats of any locale analyzed (76.2 percent), followed by Maryland (52.5 percent).

Of course, not everyone votes red or blue. Nationwide, there are 32.1 million voters registered as independents, undeclared or no affiliation β€” and of the states where party affiliation data is available, Massachusetts has the highest share of independent voters overall (64 percent). Alaska (62 percent), and Colorado (49 percent) follow behind.

In addition to independent voters, some 5.4 million Americans are registered under minor parties, such as the Green Party or the Libertarian Party.
