In 2019, the US saw almost seven million property crimes, according to FBI data โ but Americans in some cities are at higher risk of being targeted than others.
The FBI collects data on property crimes, which include burglary, larceny/theft and arson, and using the Bureau's figures for 2019 to 2023, Surveillance Video ranked 45 of the country's largest cities by number of property crimes per 100 people.
The highest property crime rate belongs to Memphis, Tennessee, with 34.4 incidents per 100 residents and losses of more than $585 million over the five years studied.
Portland, Oregon (29.6) is second-worst for property crimes per capita, while third place goes to Oakland, California (28.1).
Oakland residents also suffered highest value of property stolen per person, at $1,257.38.
When it comes to the total number of property crimes committed, San Antonio, Texas, leads with 508,492 incidents recorded between 2019 and 2023.
