Using 2025 estimates based on the UN's World Urbanization Prospects, Visual Capitalist ranked the global urban agglomerations that are more populous than New York City. "Urban agglomeration" refers to the total population living within a contiguous urban area, regardless of administrative boundaries.
NYC's estimated urban agglomeration population for 2025 is 19.2 million. Of the nine world cities exceeding that, Tokyo, Japan, tops the list, with 37 million people.
Delhi, India, follows behind with a population of around 34.7 million, while Shanghai, China, takes third place (30.5 million). Another Indian city, Mumbai, is also among those trumping the Big Apple population-wise (22.1 million).
While NYC is only the tenth-largest city in the world, it's still far wealthier than every city ranking above it on the list.
