The US presidential election is just around the corner โ€” and depending on who wins, some Americans might just be leaving the country.

To understand the role politics plays in emigration from the US, Greenback Expat Tax Services surveyed more than 1,000 Americans on the country's political climate and whether it could prompt them to consider moving away.

According to the survey, 85 percent of Americans have negative feelings about the current political climate in the US.

Almost 20 percent of respondents would consider moving to a different country regardless of who is elected president in 2024. Nearly one in five Democrats would consider emigrating if the Republican candidate wins the election, while nearly one in 12 Republicans would think about leaving the US if the Democratic candidate succeeds.

The US's political climate is a bigger issue for one side of the red-blue divide than the other; Democrats are 86 percent more likely than Republicans to consider leaving the country over it.

Of those who would consider moving out of the US over the political climate, more than one in five said they would move permanently and be willing to revoke their US citizenship.

In the two years following the 2020 US election, Mexico, the UK and Canada became the top destinations for Americans to emigrate to.
